Leadbeater's Possum Detection Report – 345-506-0008 'Fitzies Hat'

This report details the methodology, results and discussion/conclusion of the detection of a critically endangered Leadbeater's Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) recorded within VicForests scheduled logging coupe 345-506-0008 along Blacksands Road, in the Yarra State Forest south-east of Warbuton.

The methodology used to detect this Leadbeater's Possum individual involved the use of a remote motion-sensing camera trap (RMSCT) setup directed towards a bait station. This is now the third recording of a critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum within or directly adjacent VicForests scheduled logging coupe 345-506-0008. We conclude that this logging coupe as well as all the surrounding logging coupes that also consist of high-quality Leadbeater’s Possum habitat along Blacksands Road should be removed from VicForests current Timber Release Plan for the conservation of the species into the future.
